Baking soda – a natural skincare remedy!

Baking soda is a widely used ingredient. We use it in lots of dishes and it is a part of every household. But, if you think that the kitchen is the only place this ingredient can be of use, you are wrong.

Baking soda is very beneficial for your skin and can be used in treating skin rashes, itchiness and acne. Among other things, it has proven to be a great skin exfoliator, but before we go on to show you just how incredible it really is, let talk about it in a bit more detail.

What is baking soda?

Sodium bicarbonate or more commonly known as baking soda is in fact a salt composed of bicarbonate and sodium ions. Famous for its alkalizing effect, this white powder is used to make food rise before it is baked.

Due to its PH of 9, baking soda relieves the burning sensation and itchiness and helps treat sunburn. Furthermore, because of its antiseptic properties it helps in the skin’s healing process.

How to use it


  • 2 tablespoons water
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon Aloe Vera gel
  • 2-3 drops lavender oil

Start by mixing the baking soda with the lavender oil and the Aloe Vera gel, then add the appropriate amount of water to make it a paste. Apply the paste on the sunburnt spot and let it sit for 10 minutes, then rinse with cold water.

The lavender oil and baking soda are helpful in reducing itchiness and burning sensation due to their antiseptic properties while the Aloe Vera gel reduces inflammation, pain and moisturizes the dry sunburnt skin.

Baking soda treats acne

Acne is a very common condition that most of use suffer from. There are lots of commercial cosmetic products, but sadly they often fail to reach the needed effect. Baking soda has both anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties which makes it the perfect natural way to deal with this condition. It prevents skin infections and reduces swelling and redness.

How to use it


  • 1 teaspoon rose water
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice

Getter the needed ingredients and mix them well to create a paste. Apply it on your skin and leave it on for 10 minutes then rinse it off with cold water. To prevent your skin from drying out, after you’ve washed off the paste, apply moisturizer. Repeat this procedure twice a week.

Lemon juice is filled with vitamin C and very effective in preventing oily skin. On the other hand, its citrus acid prevents skin infections and kills acne-causing bacteria. Moreover, baking soda and rose water reduce redness and acne breakouts and help in the balancing of the Ph of your skin.

Baking soda soothes skin rashes

Baking soda is effective in killing rash causing bacteria and calming your skin, owing to its anti-inflammation and anti-bacterial properties. It is the perfect way to naturally treat skin rashes.

How to use it


  • 1 teaspoon Aloe Vera gel
  • 2-3 drops of Chamomile essential oil
  • 1 teaspoon of baking soda

Simply mix the Aloe Vera, the baking soda and the chamomile oil to make a paste. Cover the affected areas of your skin and let it sit for 5 minutes, then wash it off with cold water. Chamomile oil is very helpful in reducing itchiness and irritation and when combined with Aloe Vera gel it has a great soothing effect.

Baking soda removes blackheads

We can all agree upon the fact that exfoliation is of great importance and a crucial part of the skin-care routine. Therefore, we suggest you make baking soda a part of your routine, due to it being an amazing exfoliator. It improves your skin’s appearance by removing dead skin-cells off the surface of your skin and increasing blood circulation.

How to use it


  • 1 teaspoon coconut oil
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon honey
  • 3 drops od Frankincense essential oil

First, mix the baking soda with the coconut oil and the honey. Next, add in the Frankincense oil. Apply this mixture on your skin and leave in on for 5 minutes. Massage the area for 2-3 minutes then rinse with cold water. Repeat this twice a week and remember to put on moisturizer after washing off the mixture.

Frankincense oil is helpful in cleaning the pores and reducing the appearance of blackheads, while coconut oil and honey help in cleaning clogged pores.


  • Baking soda may cause irritation in certain cases, so it’s a good idea to do a test before you go on to using it. The skin on your inner forearm is delicate and similar to the skin on your face which makes it the perfect spot to do the testing.
  • Scratched pimples and wounds are very sensitive, therefor if you feel something unusual, after the first few minutes, wash off the mask.
