- 2-3 tablespoons baking soda

Oil pulling is simply swishing a tablespoon of coconut oil in the mouth for a few minutes. You need to do it in the morning, on an empty stomach, as soon as you get up. Start by swishing 5 minutes every morning before breakfast. 20 minutes is what you’re opting for, but it will take some time to adjust to this kind of method so it’s best to start slow and increase the time you spent oil pulling gradually. You can always slow down if your jaw starts aching and remember not to work too hard. Gentle but thorough swishing is all that’s required. The New Toothpaste with Coconut Oil
Scientists found that the growth of Streptococcus mutans (the major cause of tooth decay) could be stopped when coconut oil was treated with digestive enzymes (just as it would be when ingested). Streptococcus mutans is an acid-producing bacteria that today affects more than 60-90% of children and most adults, meaning oral health is on a steep decline.

The researchers now want to look at how coconut oil interacts with Strep bacteria and what other strains it can inhibit from harmful bacteria. They also want to investigate the effects on gut health of digested products, such as coconut oil.
“Our data suggest that antimicrobial activity is shown by human digestion products. This could have implications for how cells lining the digestive tract are colonized by bacteria and for the overall health of the gut, “Dr. Brady said.
